There are countless multitudes of people today who don’t like their job. They don’t think their current job is what they were made to do. Have you ever felt that way? Like there is something more you are supposed to be doing with your life? Like your work doesn’t matter on the eternal scale?
You aren’t alone. Only 20% of the women we surveyed listed, “This is what I am called to do.” as their reason for working outside the home. One of our heart’s desires here at Working Women of Faith is to change that. Here’s a little more on that. But for now, we’ll explore the idea of finding your calling a little more.
Last week we looked at the first step in finding your calling: Letting go of your desires and grabbing onto God’s.
This week we will explore together the types of calling we find ourselves in throughout our lives.
There are two types of callings for us as women of faith:
The Universal Calling is the the call to a relationship with God through Christ, followed by the call to a life of discipleship-to be a student of God. These are all callings that every believer has on their life. They are Universal, they apply to all Christians.
The Universal callings are found in scripture. They’re called commandments. Yucky word, “commandments”. We see it and think, “rules”. And they are just that. But they are designed by an all-knowing, eternal God and they are based on His unconditional love for you. God commands are not a burden to bear. They are His love and protection for us.
When I go over a huge bridge like this one pictured above, I am so thankful for the guardrails that were put in place to keep me on the road, safe from the rocky, fatal shore below. That is God’s love for us. He put commandments in place to protect us from ourselves.

The second type of calling is the personal one.
The Personal Calling is the the call to the path God has for your life. There is no book in the Bible with your name on it. I cannot look up in the Bible who I am supposed to marry, how many kids I will have, and what job God has called me to. If it were that easy, everyone would be doing it.
The personal callings of God on our lives are just that, they are personal. They apply to us an no one else. They are a unique plan handcrafted by the same hand that formed the universe from nothing. Yes, that kind of plan!
What is God’s personal calling on your life?
- Does it look like my calling? Probably not.
- Does it follow some path like the woman in the pew next to you on Sunday? Not likely.
- Will it follow the course of your mother? Your aunt? Your mentor? Most likely not.

Here’s one thing you can be sure of when seeking out what God has called you to do: If you are not following God’s Universal calling on your life (aka: His commandments) you will not find out His personal calling on your life.
If you want to know the personal will of God for you, go back and do what you know. When you focus on following what you KNOW God wants you to do, He will reveal the rest to you step by step.
- Are you in a place of stagnation right now?
- Have you come to a dead end in what God’s personal calling on your life is?
- Are you wondering what to do next or where to go?
- Have you reached a point of frustration in trying to figure out God’s personal will for your life?
Go back and do what you know. Read His word-the Universal calling. Start doing that and God will show you what to do next, where to go, and will, in time, reveal His personal perfect plan for your life.
You can’t have the Personal Calling without the Universal. They are Divinely intertwined. They are Providentially connected.
God is not holding His will for your personal calling behind His back, waiting for you to guess which hand it is in. He longs to reveal this exciting, incredible plan He has lovingly designed JUST FOR YOU.
In order to find you calling, you must first follow the Master.
What about you? Are you ready to follow the master?
