- The base of your emotions
- The seat of your soul
- The source of your life
It is often:
It can be:
As women, we are known for our hearts. We are known for the caring, compassion, and cruelty of it. Perhaps that is why the command found in this week’s verse is so important for us to heed.
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. (Proverbs 4:23 NIV)
This command is from God’s heart to yours. He loves your heart. He loves you. And He desires for you to protect that which is most valuable to Him and to you…your heart.
There are three parts to this loving direction:
1. “Above all else”-Here God places the emphasis of this command. Above everything else in your life. Above your family, your husband, your kids, your friends, your workplace calling, and even yourself; above everything and anything, this is most important.
2. “Guard your heart”-This is the what that you are to do above all else-guard your heart. We are notorious for giving our heart away. For letting other people and other things into it that will only harm us in the long run.
[Tweet “There are things in our heart that have no business being there, all because we haven’t guarded it. “]
We let in people who hurt us; we let in fantasies that destroy us; we give it away to people who don’t deserve it; and we allow it to wander from our God who loves us. The only One who should be allowed full access to our heart is God.
Guarding our heart is the action step of this verse. It means that we have to pro-actively, diligently, and consistently stand sentry in front of our hearts to determine who and what is allowed in based upon God’s word alone.
There needs to be a secret password for anyone or anything to gain entrance to our heart. And we have to draw on strength from God to deny access to anyone or anything that God does not want in there. How do we know who and what God wants us to let into His territory of our heart? Ask Him. Read His word, pray, and then follow where He leads.
There is a war going on for your heart. A battle wages in the unseen spiritual realms to tear you away from your God and His purposes for your life. Be ferocious in guarding what ultimately belongs to God. Don’t let the enemy even get his foot in the door.
3. “for everything you do flows from it.” This is the “why” behind the “what”. Why should we guard our heart at all costs and above all else? Because, from our heart, flows everything in our life. If we set our affections on the wrong things and the wrong people, we WILL end up going in the wrong direction, and end up at the wrong destination.
Everything in our lives stems from our heart, so it stands to reason that we have to be careful of who and what we let in as it will eventually come out. Garbage in, garbage out.
If you are standing in a place in your life that you don’t want to be, it’s your heart that got you there.
But God’s grace is huge. You can have a do-over, a fresh start. Ask Him to cleanse your heart, forgive, and make it new. Then set about to guard what he has given you.
How will you guard your heart this week? This month? This year?
The first step is to set your mind and heart on the things of God.
Second, commit to guarding what God gives you.
Third, make it a priority above all else.
What about you? Has your heart been broken and damaged?
No damage is beyond God’s ability to repair and restore.
Will you make a commitment to guard your heart from this day forward?
