I was not very athletic as a kid. When gym class came around and it was time to pick teams for kickball, I would always get a little knot in my stomach because I knew I would be standing there until no other options were left and they had to put me on their team.
Looking at my shoes for what seemed like an eternity.
To their credit, the team captains wanted to win, and they were well aware of my kicking and running skills. They had seen me in action before, and they knew I would not help them reach their goal to win the game.
Nevertheless, it made me feel like a chump. Like I wasn’t wanted or needed. That nobody believed that I could contribute something of value to the challenge that lay ahead of us.
We all have that person we go to for help. That person who will:
- Listen to us vent without judging us
- Offer helpful hints for dealing with a person or situation
- Help us talk through a decision that needs to be made
It may be a spouse, a girlfriend, a parent.
Who do you turn to first for help?
Where do you seek advice for an issue or problem?
How often do you bypass God, “pick Him last for your team”, and go to a mere human, who you think would be your greatest chance for success in the situation?
Is God for first choice for help, or an afterthought?
Do you pass Him up?
Or go to to Him first?
God, the Maker of all Heaven and Earth stands ready to come to your aid when you call. Jesus, our Advocate, stands at the Father’s right hand making intercession for us. God calls us to cast all of our burdens on Him, because He cares for us. (1 Peter 5:7)
[Tweet “God can help you in a way that no human being ever can.”]
Can I challenge you to consciously make God your “go-to”?
I’m not saying we can’t talk to others about our issues. God has placed people in our lives to help us along this path. But people shouldn’t be our first choice.
Your help comes from the Lord.
He has chosen you to be on his team.
He desires to help you.
Don’t pass Him by today.
Make God your first “go-to”.
Choose Him over all the rest.
“My help comes from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.”
(Psalm 121:2 (NKJV)
